National Safe Boating Week
May 20 – 26th, 2023 is National Safe Boating Week. The National Weather Service partnered with the National Safe Boating Council, a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, to help promote safe boating practices. Boating can be a fun way to enjoy a summer day, but it’s important to stay safe while enjoying the water.

Lightning strikes are among the dangerous threats to a boater on the water. Not only is lightning dangerous, but a lightning strike to a boat can be very costly. Did you know that lightning can strike from 25 miles away, but thunder can only be heard from 10 miles away? The TALOS lightning detection devices detect lightning up to 25 miles away providing both visual and audible alerts when lightning is 6, 16, and 25 miles away.
