Lightning Detection for Outdoor Workers

Outdoor Workers using the TALOS Lightning Strike Detector

Recommendations from OSHA & NOAA for Lightning Safety

OSHA and NOAA LogosLightning is often overlooked as an occupational hazard. Per OSHA’s recommendations, employers need awareness about lightning hazards to ensure their workers’ safety. According to OSHA’s factsheet, precautions should be taken to prevent worker exposure to lightning.

  • Approx. 50 people are killed by lightning each year in the U.S.
  • 55% of lightning injuries & fatalities occur to outdoor workers.

Employers should follow best practices to keep employees safe while working in the elements. Supervisors and workers at outdoor worksites should take lightning safety seriously.

TALOS Lightning Awareness System

We can hear thunder from 10 miles away, but lightning can strike up to 25 miles away from the thunderstorm. With our lightning detection for outdoor workers, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to get all the safety features that expensive weather station equipment provides. Our devices use the same advanced technology to give you pronounced, crystal-clear alerts when inclement weather is near, making lightning safety on construction sites simple.

Lightning Detection Alerts:

  • GREEN with 1 beep: 25 miles away
  • BLUE with 2 beeps: 16 miles away
  • RED with 3 beeps: 6 miles away

Key Features

  • Provides awareness of dangerous lightning in the area
  • Waterproof
  • Robust design for rugged applications
  • High rate of accuracy
  • Same technology as expensive weather stations
  • No WIFI or data connection needed

Key Benefits

  • Innovative technology minimizes false indicators
  • Antenna auto tuning for optimal detection
  • Cost effective
  • Customizable OEM Solution
  • Real time instant alerts
  • Detection of cloud to ground and cloud to cloud activity

While employees are aware of the inherent dangers of lightning & storms, the fact that lightning can present a danger outside of their range of knowledge can make for a perilous situation.

With the ability to distinguish between a false disturbance and actual lightning, you can trust the alerts are detecting imminent danger in real time.

Why TALOS® Lightning Alerts? Phones Already Send Notifications!

  • Phones are in pocket or not heard due to surrounding noise
  • Phones are set to silent/do not disturb
  • No data signal or connection
  • Weather notifications are set for specific intervals, real time updates can be missed
  • Weather app updates are set for a location other than where the person is actually located

TALOS Portable Lightning Detector (SFD-1000-G)

Talos Portable Lightning Detector - 3 Colors Indicate Distance of StormThe TALOS® portable lightning detector comes with a mount for easy mounting onto any type of outdoor equipment. You can also carry it with you anywhere you are working outdoors.

Benefits & Features

  • Compact design
  • Auto sleep functionality**
  • Easy to mount
  • Easy to detach
  • Long battery life (1 year based on average usage)
  • Battery powered requires 4 AA batteries (recommended)

**Pressing the ON button once will turn on the device and put it in “normal mode.” In this mode, the device continuously monitors the environment for weather activity. However, pressing the button a second time will put the unit into auto-sleep mode, meaning it will only turn on if motion is detected. It will then revert to sleep mode after 30 minutes of no motion detection.

Where to Mount the Lightning Detector

Electrical devices such as cell phones and beepers can emit electrical noise that may cause the device to discharge a false positive signal. To avoid this, it’s best to keep these devices at least 3 feet away from the unit. If the unit detects any electrical interference, it will flash through the green, blue, and red visual alerts.

The SFD-1000-R Remote Lightning Detector

Construction Worker Inside Construction Equipment with TALOS remote Lightning Detector

SFD-1000-R Talos Remote Lightning DetectorWhen lightning is nearby, every moment counts. Outdoor workers may wear protective ear equipment or use loud equipment. Sooner than they realize, a storm is rapidly moving in with little time to get to safety.

The TALOS Remote Lightning Detector is a ready-to-install lightning detector solution. Utilizing a compact design for remote mounting & communication of lightning storms, implementing our lightning detector is possible in any number of applications.

The remote version lightning detector can be purchased with a rocker switch or round indicator light.

Optional External Power Horn

Perfect for Noisy Environments or Out of View of Visual Alerts

There are many situations when employees could be working in an area where their view is obstructed from seeing flashing alerts.

And noisy environments are commonplace as well.

For these situations, an alarm horn can be purchased to provide louder audible alerts that can be heard over long distances and loud noises.

Safety isn’t an option, it’s essential!
