What To Do if You’re Horseback Riding in a Storm

Are you prepared to protect yourself and your horse if a storm rolls in? Horseback riding through a storm may seem like something out of a fantasy novel, but lightning makes this a dangerous venture. Instead of powering through your ride to beat the rain and thunder, discover what to do if you’re horseback riding in an unexpected storm.

Seek Shelter Immediately

The first and most important action is to seek shelter if a storm catches up to you. If you’re near a stable or any other shelter, lead your horse there immediately. Shelter protects you from direct exposure to harsh weather like rain, hail, lightning, and wind. It may also keep your horse calm. Once in a shelter, wait for the storm to pass. Avoid taking shelter under trees or other tall objects that might attract lightning.

Stay Calm and Lead Your Horse

If no immediate shelter is available and you’re out in the open, it’s crucial to stay calm. Your horse can pick up on your emotions and may become distressed if it senses your nerves. Speak to your horse in a calm, reassuring voice and hold the reins firmly. If possible, find a low-lying area away from trees, poles, and metal objects to minimize the risk of a lightning strike.

Protect Yourself and Your Horse

Protecting yourself and your horse from the elements is the most important thing to do when caught in a storm. After dismounting, use your body to shield your horse’s head from rain or hail. The goal is to minimize stress and discomfort for your horse while ensuring your safety.

Wait It Out

If you’re taking shelter far away from your stable, the best thing you can do is wait out the storm. Wait until there is no chance of lightning threats 30 minutes after the storm passes—lightning can strike from as far as 25 miles away from the storm’s center. When the storm clears, give your horse a thorough check before continuing with your ride. In extreme cases, contact local emergency services for assistance.

Being caught in a storm while horseback riding can be a frightening experience, but knowing what to do can reduce risks to yourself and your horse. With a TALOS portable lightning detector, you can remain situationally aware of incoming and outgoing lightning while hitting the trails, allowing you to act appropriately. Reduce your lightning danger while horseback riding, and stay prepared with a portable lightning detector!
